As a mother, one of the worst feelings in the world is seeing your precious little baby in pain. A teething baby is hard on both baby and mom. We try to ease their pain and comfort them the best we can, wishing we could carry it instead. Knowing that the unfamiliar feeling they have must be so scary. After having gone through baby’s first teeth 4 times now, I’ve compiled a list of my most reached for pain relievers. Here are my 10 teething must-haves.
Pain Relief.
My first baby was born over 10 years ago, I was a new and scared mom. I had read all the books and I knew what signs to look for when it came to teething. Seeing her in so much pain I knew I had to find a pain reliever, but exclusively breastfeeding, I was afraid that using a numbing agent would affect her nursing. So I went on the hunt for a natural product and that’s when I found the Camilia homeopathic drops from Boiron. The single doses come in an aluminum pouch of 5 and help relieve pain, restlessness, irritability, and diarrhea that can be experienced during teething. They’re perfect for throwing in your purse, diaper bag, and your nightstand. So easy to give in the middle of the night to your restless baby. They have a whole range of products that I just love!
Along with the drops, another natural pain reliever I found were Baltic Amber necklaces. Baltic amber has a natural substance called succinic acid which has analgesic properties and can assist in pain relief. When wearing it, the heat of the skin activates the resins and allows trace oils to be absorbed by the skin. Sometimes teething can be taxing on their tiny immune systems, Baltic Amber can help support it. As well as help calm the stress and anxiety that those pesky cutting teeth can bring. I was always a little nervous about my babies wearing necklaces, so I started wrapping them twice around their ankles. Make sure you purchase one that has a knot between each bead in case it did break, to prevent choking.
Dealing with the Teething Drool.
So much drool!!! All my babies were soggy messes! With my firstborn, I had these flimsy bibs that would soak through in 2 min. I just couldn’t keep up – I was constantly doing laundry. It wasn’t till my third that I found these amazing bibs. They are nice and thick and have a soft backing, unlike other plastic backings of waterproof bibs that crinkle. I absolutely love the bandana look instead of the traditional bib style, so cute! They have so many different styles in packs of 8.
Along with all that drool came red, dry, cracked, irritated cheeks for my babies. 3 out of the 4 were born in the fall, so all started teething in the cold and harsh winter. I really struggled with the first 2 to find something that would help. But getting it right with baby #3 thanks to my friend. This moisturizing balm from Aleva was a lifesaver. It soothed and helped protect, making a barrier against the cold and wet drool. Perfect size to keep in my purse or baby bag. The stick is so easy to apply. I love this company. I’ve been using their Lavender Baby Wash for 10 years. I actually use it to wash my face LOL! Shhhh.
Gnawing Teething Toys.
What’s with all the biting? Teething babies become like little savages chomping down on anything in sight! They aren’t being malicious, biting down on something helps alleviate the pressure and pain from their pearly whites trying to get through the gum line. Here are my favorite teethers in my 10 teething must-haves!
These silicone and wood rings are easy for babies to hold, and give them different textures to chew on. You can easily attach it to a pacifier holder and a car seat or stroller. You can also pop it into the freezer for added relief.
These little mushroom top teethers are so adorable. Easy for babies to grasp in their hand and chew or suck on.
All my babies loved their teething mitts. I honestly could never quite get it to stay on their hand, but they loved just holding and chewing on it. They really enjoyed the crinkling sound they make. Easy to just pop in the wash to clean.
Another classic tried and true in our home, is Sophie la Girafe. This natural rubber teether set comes with the classic Sophie that stimulates the 5 senses. Made of soft rubber it’s easy to hold and chew. Plus, its squeaker will keep your baby entertained. The set also comes with a teething ring.
These little teethers double as baby’s first toothbrush. They can easily hold the handle and chew on the silicone head. The texture massages and stimulates the gums. The design, which is meant to look like a pacifier, will prevent chocking.
Last but not least, my favorite! This is not just a teething toy. These Squigz by Fat Brain Toys have quickly become my all time most loved baby/toddler toy. They are on the pricey side, but so worth it. These little silicone suction squigz are amazing to encourage fine motor skills, spatial reasoning, creativity, exploration, and experimentation. They will grow with your baby. From chewing on while teething, to sticking on a mirror during tummy time to develop core strength by trying to reach them. Using them stuck on the floor when they learn to sit. Sticking them on the window or patio door to help them stand. And using them for building as they grow into toddlerhood. I LOVE THEM! All of their toys are fantastic!
There you have it, my 10 teething must-haves. Hope you find these items useful in your baby’s teething journey. Most important thing to help ease your baby’s pain are snuggles…all day and all night. Hold them as much as you can while they are little. The days are long…but the years are short. Thank you for reading.
