The Gin Refresher

Raise your hand if you’re a Gin lover! If someone would have said that to me a year ago, I definitely would NOT have raised my hand. I think I’d tried Gin once, and hatted it! I’ve always been a Vodka, Rum, or Tequila kinda girl. But all that changed one day when this delicious cucumber, ginger, and lime concoction came into my life. The Gin Refresher is what we called it.

I simply adore cocktails! There is no shortage of ones that I love-mojitos, strawberry daiquiri, pina colada, Miami vise, cosmo, martinis, margaritas…the list goes on and on. But as you can see, nothing with Gin. I was quite content with my cocktail roster, I did not feel the need for anything containing it. But wait…

Favorite gold shaker set!

Where had this cocktail been all my life?! All I knew is I was so glad it now was. My husband and our good friend had gone to Newfoundland on a work trip. He called me one night to let me know he had just tasted the most amazing cocktail… with GIN?! I couldn’t believe it. Like me, my husband had a strong dislike for gin. Being a small town, they had this cocktail a few nights in a row and eventually left with the ingredients.

Let me tell you, I was quite skeptical when my husband came home and made me this drink. I was floored when he asked me to take out the ingredients! Not only does he not enjoy Gin, he also hates ginger with a passion. So, already this cocktail had two ingredients that were not his favorite, how in the world could this be the best thing he’d had? But as I pulled out all the ingredients he asked me to- the limes, cucumber, ginger, and simple syrup…I realized that aside from the Gin, this cocktail might be tasty!

The Newf Cocktail!

IT WAS SO GOOD!!! The flavors blended so beautifully together. I couldn’t believe how delicious this cocktail was! And that it was made with Gin! I was just beside myself. You will thank me a hundred times over after you try it LOL! If you are looking for something fresh, this cocktail can not be beat! Without further ado…here is the recipe for the Gin Refresher.

The Gin Refresher

Freshest summer cocktail you will ever taste!
Servings 1 drink

Ingredients

  • 1/2 inch Chunk of Fresh Ginger
  • 1 inch Piece of Lebanese Cucumber
  • 1 1/2 oz. Gin
  • 2 oz. Lime Juice
  • 2 oz. Simple Syrup
  • 1 slice Lime for Rimming Glass
  • 1/4 c. Sugar for Rimming Glass
  • Ice

Instructions

  • Start by preparing your glass. Pour sugar into a bowl that your glass will fit in. Rim the glass with the slice of lime and dip it in the bowl of sugar. Set aside.
  • From the cucumber piece, slice three thin rounds and set them aside for the garnish.
  • Slice ginger into pieces and put in a cocktail shaker.
  • Add Gin to the shaker and muddle.
  • Cut the leftover cucumber into two, add to the shaker, and muddle again.
  • Add lime juice, simple syrup, and ice to the shaker. Close and shake it all up!!!
  • Add more ice to the glass. With a cocktail strainer, strain the drink into the glass. Top with the cucumber garnish.
  • Enjoy!!!

Notes

You can double this recipe to make two drinks. I wouldn’t recommend more than that in a shaker.
To make the simple syrup:
In a saucepan add 1 part sugar to 1 1/2 parts water. Bring to a boil. Boil for 1 min. Let cool before using. Can be stored in the fridge for two weeks.

In contrast to many Gins out on the market, Romeo Gin or Seaweed Gin from Newfoundland Distillery Co., are lacking that strong juniper berry taste that I disliked so much. The Gin Refresher has become a staple at our house and friend’s. Whenever there’s a get together, it’s now the most requested drink. One little sip and you’ll understand why. Hope you enjoy this recipe and thank you for stopping by. Drink responsibly 😉
