Which child doesn’t love to sell lemonade. As a child, you might have loved the idea of waiting for a scorching hot day to sit out on the front lawn with a pitcher of probably awful lemonade your siblings and yourself had made. The excitement of every passerby who might to so hot they just had to buy a cup. That’s what summers were about then. I still love lemonade! I’m not a big soft drink fan, so when we head to Wendy’s, I always get the strawberry lemonade. Regular lemonade is delish, but the ladder just has a little something extra.
When we brought home all those baskets of strawberries from the patch this year, strawberry lemonade was on the kid’s list of things they wanted to make. They didn’t have to twist my arm! The fresh, sweet, and juicy strawberries were perfect for this recipe. The secret to making the best lemonade is starting with simple syrup. Simple syrup is such a versatile thing to make and have readily available. It can be used in drinks and baking. In a pot, simply bring to a boil equal parts of white granulated sugar and water. Once it comes to a boil, let it boil for 2 min and shut off the heat. Make sure to let it cool before use. It can be stored in an airtight container for 2 weeks.
Of course, using fresh lemons is always best, but if you’re in a tight squeeze (see what I did there?) you can use lemon concentrate. It might not be as tart as fresh lemons, but my kids can’t tell the difference. As for the strawberries, you can mash them or throw them in the blender with your lemon juice. You’ll want to use a strainer or sieve to remove all the strawberry pulp. From there, you’ll simply combine your simple syrup, strawberry lemon juice, ice, and water in a pitcher.
